“A rooster crows only when it sees the light. Put him in the dark and he’ll never crow. I have seen the light and I’m crowing.”
– Muhammad Ali
I believe for a myriad of complex reasons we have stopped crowing as a nation. And, while undeniably this year’s political season has demonstrated a lot of outraged people, what are people really crowing about? Are people really speaking truth? Is their rage really focused on the dominant?
At Muhammad Ali’s memorial service on Friday, Rabbi Michael Lerner inspired the crowed to do more than simply remember the man. For Rabbi Lerner, the “way to honor Muhammad Ali is to BE Muhammad Ali.” Yet, Rabbi Lerner’s brilliance shined with his lucid understanding that “our commitment is to recognize that God has created everyone in God’s image and that everyone is equally precious.”
Mohammed Ali called on us to speak truth to power. Rabbi Lerner illuminated the power of truth. Blessed are those who seek to live their lives with both.
